Case study
Purview Sensitivity Labels + DLP Rollout
01Challenge
Sensitive data flows through email, SharePoint, and OneDrive every day — and in a global enterprise, "just be careful" isn't a control. The organization needed real information protection: classification, loss prevention, and retention that auditors could verify, without turning everyday collaboration into an obstacle course for employees.
02Approach
- Classify first. Created and deployed sensitivity labels and label policies, giving the organization a consistent language for what "sensitive" means and how each class should be handled.
- Prevent, don't just detect. Rolled out Data Loss Prevention policies and retention controls that stop sensitive data from leaving the wrong way — across mail and collaboration workloads.
- Partner across the business. Worked directly with HR, Legal, the Security Operations Center, and compliance teams so policies reflected real business and regulatory requirements — not just what the tooling made easy.
- Keep workflows intact. Tuned controls so protection didn't break how people actually work; a DLP policy users route around is worse than none.

04Outcome
An auditable information-protection program: classified data, enforced DLP and retention, and policies built with the teams who own the risk — HR, Legal, SOC, and compliance. Protection that's documented, defensible, and doesn't get in the way of the business.
